…covering everything which includes the word "data" or "information"
A PIM solution can be very useful for a company’s website. The product data can be used from the PIM solution to feed into the website such as images, content and documents. At the same time, the website combined with the product data can be used to link to other business objects such as customers. The e-commerce part will be responsible for order processing and presentation of the product data. It is vital that the overall solution ties in with the inventory management and logistics in order to gain cost savings from the solution.
A further example where PIM may come in handy is for product catalog publishing. The product data is stored in a central location. The publishing component of an e-business solution can extract the necessary product data from the PIM solution and then save and manage the catalog content in a media-independent state. Then it depends on the capabilities of the publishing software how well the catalog can be put together using the data.

I agree, but the user interface for maintenance with IBM MDM for PIM is not optimal. A SMASH based application can be of extra help and better user satisfaction.

Thanks Paul for your comment. Can you please elaborate a bit further on what you mean by “SMASH based application”? I have not heard of this term before.
Thanks,
